The repercussions of global recession could be catastrophic for developing countries, UNDP resident representative in Mauritania, Michel de la Taille said in Nouakchott. At a programme to launch the UNCTAD-prepared 2001 report on trade and development in the world de la Taille Tuesday emphasised how the document is highly critical about the status of the global economy due to the decline in the US economy. He said that despite the economic recovery accelerated by the commercial "boom" induced by the new technologies, the global economy is following the trend of economic recession in the US, thus casting doubts over possible worldwide economic recovery. The report recommends that a regulatory body be established to help streamline the global economy. In response to how Africa could cope with the problem, de la Taille hailed the accelerated sub-regional groupings and integration of African countries to mitigate adverse effects of global economic recession. Citing the growth rate for Mauritania at 5.4 percent, he recommended prompt diversification of the export sector and the creation of a more favourable environment for business and industry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2001 Panafrican News Agency.
